Ultima VIII was heavily criticised by fans of the Ultima series since it came out, but, maybe because I played it before I got to know the rest of the Ultima games, I actually found this game to be very charming und special. But anyway, intelligence won't go up and the only two methods I know that work are reading and casting tons of spells. If you have enough patience to save often, it shouldn't be the problem. Ghouls are the main source of experience for me. That method indeed works but it is not impossible to go through the game without it. Keep hitting him until your Strength and Dexterity are at a satisfactory level, and although he won't talk to you for the time being, later he will forget your nastiness and talk as normal. He will not fight back or call Beren the Sorcerer, and being a game-crucial character, is immortal. One trick to increasing your strength and dexterity right at the start, by the way, is to immediately attack Devon (the fellow who pulls you out of the sea at the beginning). That is indeed the maximum, as far as I remember. One more thing, what's the maximum points for strength, dexterity, and intelligence, i can't boost them up more than 25, is it the maximum they can get or is there another way to increase it?
